\"\"<\/a>Director Ridley Scott\u2019s latest flick depicts the story of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, the \u201cbased on true events\u201d kidnapping of his grandson, and a mother\u2019s desperate attempt to find her missing boy.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the Money in the World\u201d is equal parts distressing and powerful and unnerving. And the story behind<\/em> the film is just as fascinating as the film itself.<\/p>\n

Scott finished shooting with the original cast, which included Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey \u2013 under heavy make-up, to add almost 30 years to his appearance \u2013 as moneybags Getty.<\/p>\n

But after sexual assault allegations against Spacey surfaced, a decision was made in November 2017 to replace the actor<\/a> with another Oscar winner, Christopher Plummer, whose age more closely matches that of the character he\u2019s portraying.<\/p>\n

Serendipitous? (Shrugs) sure.<\/p>\n

Scott quickly reshot 22 scenes, substituting Plummer for Spacey, and incorporated the new footage into the film in time for its Dec. 22 release.<\/p>\n

That<\/em>\u2026 deserves some recognition of its own, ammiright?<\/p>\n

And if you didn\u2019t know this before seeing \u201cAll the Money\u2026,\u201d you\u2019d never know any different; Scott\u2019s cut-and-paste is that<\/em> flawless.<\/p>\n

As the film opens, black-and-white visuals slowly give way to color as the camera tracks the movement of a fearless young man through the busy streets Rome, circa 1973. And almost immediately, Paulo \u2013 or Paul, or J. Paul Getty III (Charlie Plummer, no relation to Christopher) \u2013 is yanked into a van by a gaggle of masked men.<\/p>\n

Why? Well, turns out this isn\u2019t just any<\/em> kid; this is the grandson of deep pockets \u2013 the deepest! <\/em>\u2013 and in a voiceover explainer, Paul sort of puts the pieces in place.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy grandpa wasn\u2019t just the richest man in the world; he was the richest man in the history of the world,\u201d he states. Balls!<\/p>\n

There\u2019s mention of Paul\u2019s grandfather bringing oil out of the Saudi Arabian desert (the only scene in which Spacey\u2019s image still exists), and how \u201cthere was so much oil that there wasn\u2019t a ship big enough to carry it all. So my grandpa invented one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course.<\/p>\n

The kidnappers inform Paul\u2019s mother Gail (Michelle Williams) \u201cwe have your son,\u201d and there\u2019s a prompt demand of $17 million for his release. Balls!<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have any money,\u201d she tearfully proclaims, to which baddie intermediary Cinquanta (Romain Duris) matter-of-factly replies, \u201cGet it from your father-in-law; he has all the money in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

If only it were that simple.<\/p>\n

What follows is a chess match between the kidnappers and Gail \u2013 and between Gail and her former father-in-law, filled with desperate<\/em> pleas for the funds required to release her son.<\/p>\n

We hear Getty say to his grandson via flashback, \u201cYou\u2019re a Getty; Gettys are special\u201d and later tell hired security advisor Fletcher Chase (Mark Wahlberg) \u201c\u2026 I don\u2019t know what I would do if anything happened to that boy,\u201d so it\u2019s altogether mind-blowing when he then refuses to pay the ransom.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have 14 grandchildren,\u201d Getty reasons. \u201cIf I start paying ransoms, I\u2019ll have 14 kidnapped grandchildren.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fair. But Chase warns him, \u201cThey will do things to Paul that cannot be undone with any<\/em> amount of money.\u201d<\/p>\n

And that<\/em> is what makes this flick so difficult to watch. I felt like it took a while for things to get rolling, but once they did, I was completely<\/em> invested.<\/p>\n

Half the time I was pissed at Getty for seeming so withdrawn and callous while he preached about the importance of family; the rest of the time I was terrified for that kid, especially when sh*t gets real.<\/p>\n

And to really deliver that sensation, Scott is sure to contaminate the lens on a few occasions to bring this realism front and center. GAH!<\/p>\n

Williams continues to impress, exhibiting incredible strength in the face of unfathomable and personal horror. You will feel every shred of the panic and anxiety and outrage and strife her character endures.<\/p>\n

She was nominated for a Golden Globe for this role, so don\u2019t be surprised if (err, when<\/em>) you hear her name among this year\u2019s Oscar nominees, to be announced on Jan. 23.<\/p>\n

After seeing Plummer as J. Paul Getty, I can\u2019t imagine anyone else in that role. And given the controversy, I think Ridley Scott was wise to pull Spacey from the film; had he not, this flick likely would be receiving attention for all the wrong reasons.<\/p>\n

Instead we\u2019re allowed to focus on the (true-ish) story and the captivating abilities of the actors bringing these characters to the big screen.<\/p>\n

And watching that in staggering awe is worth \u201cAll the Money in the World.\u201d<\/p>\n
